Quick tips
- Make sure you keep precise records of where you found your information. (your sources)
- Do not readily accept everything you read or hear – questioning accepted ‘facts’ may lead you to new information.
- Be open to disputes and tragedies, not just successes – all history is not rosy!
- Do not try to cover everything, keep your scope small so that you can complete it.
- You will need determination and persistence, research will take time and effort, and there will be obstacles to overcome.
Talk to your relatives
Uncles, aunts, grandparents, great-grandparents and don’t forget cousins! They may be able to provide names, dates, even photos or certificates. Older relatives may have interesting stories to pass down from previous generations. We have designed some Questions for children to ask their Grandparents but these questions can give you a basis when talking to relatives.
When you have got as many answers as possible, you can start to put basic details on your Family Tree. At this point, remember that you will want to ‘prove’ anything you have been told, but it is a great starting point.
Gather the evidence
You should always confirm the information you collect by obtaining documentation such as Birth, Marriage and Death certificates. Census records can help to confirm where your relatives were living at that time. A Census has been taken every 10 years since 1801, although only those from 1841 contain any useful information such as names and addresses, and the latest available to view is for the year 1921.
See our Parish Registers for further information on how these records can help.
The 1939 Register was compiled at the outbreak of WW2 and used to issue identity cards and ration books. It was updated with subsequent marriages and deaths and also used as the basis of patient details on the formation of the NHS. The records for living persons are redacted.
Many records can be searched online via free or subscription websites. Volunteers at Treetops can give you guidance.
Record your findings
Here is an example of a Family Tree which can be printed and completed by hand. Or google family tree templates for a selection of free downloadable options.
There are a number of computer programs available where you can insert the details and the program will assemble various tree styles for you. Basic programmes are free, some are connected to pay to view websites and some are stand alone family history software. DFHS volunteers are happy to discuss their experiences with you to help you choose how to record your family tree.
Join a Family History Society
Joining a local Family History Society can give you access to research facilities, as well as the opportunity to meet others with similar interests and talk through ways to get round your obstacles. To join the Dorset Family History Society, see our Membership page.
We also offer beginners workshops – details can be found on our Education page.

Parish Registers
Church (or parish) registers were introduced in 1538 and contain records of baptisms and burials (as distinct from births and deaths) and, of course, marriages. Although many early registers have been lost over the years, a surprising number still exist. Today, very few registers, other than those which are still in use, are held at churches.
In addition to the registers, from 1598 parish priests had to send to their Bishop an ‘annual return’, a copy of the register, known as a Bishops’ Transcript. Those that still exist can be very useful in supplying entries omitted from the register or replacing a missing register.
Details of the Parishes which have been transcribed can be found by entering the Parish Name in the Search box below. The result shows the list of transcriptions which are held at our Treetops Research Centre.
NB The Earliest Record date is the oldest available. There may not have been any events to transcribe in some years.

Dorset Strays Index
Strays are ancestors who turn up in records away from their birthplace or the place with which they were normally associated. For example, if a man born in Dorchester emigrates to Canada and dies there, his memorial may record “Born Dorchester, England”. Similarly, a man may marry in London, but the register entry may record him as, “of the parish of Poole, Dorset”. Another kind of stray is the Bridport man who appears in armed service records.
As a society we continue to research those who could be defined as a stray, to help family historians with their research.
If you have useful information about Dorset born strays please contact us at Treetops Research Centre using the Enquiries option.
Index to Dorset Wills & Admons (1560-1911)
The index is of Wills and Admons proved in the courts of the Diocese of Bristol, the Archdeaconry of Dorset and several Peculiars. It provides a surname search facility and yields a reference to locate the deed plus, in some cases, additional information.
