Since its creation, ships of the Royal Navy have sailed along Dorset’s coast or dropped anchor in its waters. Through the war-laden years of the twentieth century Portland paid a major part in the defence of our island shores and Poole still remains a home of the Royal Marines and Special Boat Squadron.
