SUMMARY:Bournemouth Blue Plaques by Steve Roberts

The official scheme was originally administered by English Heritage and was launched in 1866 in London\, on the initiative of the politician William Ewart to mark the homes and workplaces of famous people. \n\n\n\nPreviously Steve have delighted us with talks on various subjects including\, Jack the Ripper\, Mr Selfridge\, Dad’s Army and When Dorset made History.

SUMMARY:Hands across the Ocean – True stories of Emigration\, Tragedy and Heroes by Helen Baggott - Zoom meeting

Her work has been recognised by national newspapers as a “postcard detective” and an “heirloom detective”. \n\n\n\nBeginning with postcards sent more than a hundred years ago\, this new talk shares the true stories of determined people who sought new lives abroad and those that built some of the shipping lines that we recognise today\, including a family connected with the bravery of the Kindertransport. \n\n\n\nSociety Members who have consented to receive information by e-mail will find a meeting invitation link in the latest E-News. SUMMARY:Lifting the Lid by Miranda Pender
DESCRIPTION:Miranda is a singer and songwriter who presents entertaining talks based around songs that she’s written. Raunchy\, romantic\, heartbreaking\, humorous\, her subjects range from pretentious garden designers to a 16-year-old boy killed at the Battle of the Somme. \n\n\n\nLifting the Lid is an example of the perils of researching family history. \n\n\n\nA forebear deported to Australia for sheep-stealing a couple of hundred years ago has a certain raffish glamour. But how do you feel if the uncomfortable truth you discover has repercussions which have persisted to the present day? \n\n\n\nLove\, loss\, jealousy\, betrayal\, revenge\, often funny\, sometimes poignant\, occasionally shocking\, Miranda presents a set of original songs based around some of the more bizarre stories unearthed from her family history. \n\n\n\nA darkly humorous talk which includes 5 original songs plus a slideshow.

SUMMARY:Women in Travail : Childbirth and midwifery 1600-1950 by Janet Few
DESCRIPTION:Janet is currently serving as the President of the Family History Federation and is an experienced and qualified family\, social and community historian who lectures regularly on these subjects throughout the UK and overseas. She has spoken to us many times previously and we are always happy to welcome her back. \n\n\n\nOne thing that is certain about all our ancestors is that they were born. Childbirth practices vary through the ages. What would giving birth have been like for mothers in the past? Childbirth was not without its hazards. Until the mid-nineteenth century between five and ten percent of all mothers died giving birth. What might cause those deaths? How and when did survival rates improve? How would mothers have been cared for and by whom? Those who attended the birth\, be they family\, friends or medical professionals played a crucial part. As well as discussing historical childbirth practices and pregnancy advice in the Western world\, this presentation looks at the role of the midwife\, the history of midwifery in Britain and records that may be available for those who acted as midwives. \n\n\n\nSociety Members who have consented to receive information by e-mail will find a meeting invitation link in the latest E-News\, usually sent on the last Friday each month. If that has not been received\, it is also available in the password protected Members’ Area. \n\n\n\nThose who do not receive E-News\, or who are not Society Members\, are welcome to join this meeting and should use this link and select the Liaison option to message us with a request for an invitation link. This request should reach us at least 6 hours before the meeting is due to start\, and the link will be sent about 2 hours before the meeting starts. \n\n\n\nThere is a charge of £3.00 per person\, payable at this link.
