DESCRIPTION:Andrea Hetherington is a professional historian\, writer and researcher with a passion for the past who writes captivating books and regularly delivers engaging talks across the UK and internationally on a range of historical topics. \n\n\n\nWhen thinking about First World War deserters\, most people bring to mind those who were shot at dawn and pardoned nearly 100 years later\, but these were a tiny minority of those who deserted the armed forces during WW1. \n\n\n\nThis talk looks at the much bigger picture. \n\n\n\nSociety Members who have consented to receive information by e-mail will find a meeting invitation link in the latest E-News. If that has not been received\, it is also available in the password protected Members’ Area. \n\n\n\nThose who do not receive E-News\, or who are not Society Members\, are welcome to join this meeting and should use this link and select the Liaison option to message us with a request for an invitation link. SUMMARY:Rolls-Royce and the Silver Lady by Kevin Patience
DESCRIPTION:Kevin Patience grew up in Kenya and served in the Royal Air Force\, where he also learned to dive. A Malta posting introduced him to many historical aircraft and shipwrecks. As part of his interest in military history he was involved in the restoration of British forces graves in Bahrain. \n\n\n\nIn the 1990s Kevin published a number of books on military and transport history\, later writing articles for a variety of aviation\, medal and railway journals. \n\n\n\nThe Silver Lady or Spirit of Ecstasy mascot has always been associated with Rolls-Royce motor cars since the early days. \n\n\n\nThis is the tragic love story of a couple\, Lord Montague of Beaulieu and Eleanor Thornton who was the model for the winged figure that has adorned thousands of Rolls-Royce radiators. A moving and fascinating story not to be missed.

SUMMARY:Life in the Victorian Workhouseby Luke Mouland
DESCRIPTION:Luke Mouland is a freelance genealogist\, researcher and speaker based in North Dorset. During the last 15 years\, he has undertaken research projects for a range of clients\, including probate solicitors\, authors\, and the BBC’s hit TV series\, ‘Who Do You Think You Are?’ This talk is about life on the Parish. Most of us have ancestors who were unfortunate enough to experience hard times and had no other choice but to turn to the Parish for assistance whether inside the workhouse or for temporary outside relief. Many were born inside the workhouse and many died there.

SUMMARY:AGM followed by talk "It was the Best of Times\, it was the Worst of Times – the Charles Dickens Story" by Brian and Jacqueline Sutton
DESCRIPTION:Members are invited to our AGM to have a say in the future of DFHS.  Vote on proposals for future membership structure and fees and vote in your committee for 2026-2027.  If members cannot attend they are encouraged to vote by proxy – as this will count towards the quorum we required for a valid AGM to be declared.    Proxy voting forms and reports will be published in the member area of the website (Society meetings).    \n\n\n\nThe AGM will be followed by a talk by Brian and Jacqueline Sutton \n\n\n\nJacqueline is a retired English teacher\, whilst Brian spent many years in amateur theatricals\, property management and theatre management before retirement. Whatever the subject\, they believe in presenting it in an entertaining way with the odd quirky fact and amusing tale as they go along (as they say – snoring is so off-putting).This is the story of a literary genius. Charles Dickens had a controversial private life and this presentation covers his social campaigning\, his humour\, the stories and characters. From ‘A Christmas Carol’ to ‘Pickwick Papers’ to ‘Oliver Twist’ and much more.
