SUMMARY:Life in the Victorian Workhouseby Luke Mouland
DESCRIPTION:Luke Mouland is a freelance genealogist\, researcher and speaker based in North Dorset. During the last 15 years\, he has undertaken research projects for a range of clients\, including probate solicitors\, authors\, and the BBC’s hit TV series\, ‘Who Do You Think You Are?’ This talk is about life on the Parish. Most of us have ancestors who were unfortunate enough to experience hard times and had no other choice but to turn to the Parish for assistance whether inside the workhouse or for temporary outside relief. Many were born inside the workhouse and many died there.

SUMMARY:Rolls-Royce and the Silver Lady by Kevin Patience
DESCRIPTION:Kevin Patience grew up in Kenya and served in the Royal Air Force\, where he also learned to dive. A Malta posting introduced him to many historical aircraft and shipwrecks. As part of his interest in military history he was involved in the restoration of British forces graves in Bahrain. \n\n\n\nIn the 1990s Kevin published a number of books on military and transport history\, later writing articles for a variety of aviation\, medal and railway journals. \n\n\n\nThe Silver Lady or Spirit of Ecstasy mascot has always been associated with Rolls-Royce motor cars since the early days. \n\n\n\nThis is the tragic love story of a couple\, Lord Montague of Beaulieu and Eleanor Thornton who was the model for the winged figure that has adorned thousands of Rolls-Royce radiators. A moving and fascinating story not to be missed.

SUMMARY:Lifting the Lid by Miranda Pender
DESCRIPTION:Miranda is a singer and songwriter who presents entertaining talks based around songs that she’s written. Raunchy\, romantic\, heartbreaking\, humorous\, her subjects range from pretentious garden designers to a 16-year-old boy killed at the Battle of the Somme. \n\n\n\nLifting the Lid is an example of the perils of researching family history. \n\n\n\nA forebear deported to Australia for sheep-stealing a couple of hundred years ago has a certain raffish glamour. But how do you feel if the uncomfortable truth you discover has repercussions which have persisted to the present day? \n\n\n\nLove\, loss\, jealousy\, betrayal\, revenge\, often funny\, sometimes poignant\, occasionally shocking\, Miranda presents a set of original songs based around some of the more bizarre stories unearthed from her family history. \n\n\n\nA darkly humorous talk which includes 5 original songs plus a slideshow.

SUMMARY:Women in Travail : Childbirth and midwifery 1600-1950 by Janet Few
DESCRIPTION:Janet is currently serving as the President of the Family History Federation and is an experienced and qualified family\, social and community historian who lectures regularly on these subjects throughout the UK and overseas. She has spoken to us many times previously and we are always happy to welcome her back. \n\n\n\nOne thing that is certain about all our ancestors is that they were born. Childbirth practices vary through the ages. What would giving birth have been like for mothers in the past? Childbirth was not without its hazards. Until the mid-nineteenth century between five and ten percent of all mothers died giving birth. What might cause those deaths? How and when did survival rates improve? How would mothers have been cared for and by whom? Those who attended the birth\, be they family\, friends or medical professionals played a crucial part. As well as discussing historical childbirth practices and pregnancy advice in the Western world\, this presentation looks at the role of the midwife\, the history of midwifery in Britain and records that may be available for those who acted as midwives. \n\n\n\nSociety Members who have consented to receive information by e-mail will find a meeting invitation link in the latest E-News\, usually sent on the last Friday each month. If that has not been received\, it is also available in the password protected Members’ Area. \n\n\n\nThose who do not receive E-News\, or who are not Society Members\, are welcome to join this meeting and should use this link and select the Liaison option to message us with a request for an invitation link.
